Winter demand is real — and growing

Despite the chillier weather, winter bookings are on the rise across the UK, and the South Hams is no exception. According to Sykes Holiday Cottages:

  • Winter bookings rose 39% in 2022 vs. pre-pandemic levels

  • January saw a 9% year-on-year increase in bookings

  • Nearly 25% of UK holidaymakers now book off-season breaks

Guests are actively looking for cosy countryside stays, quiet getaways, and festive experiences. With its rolling hills, scenic estuaries, and charming villages, the South Hams is a perfect winter retreat.

Why you should keep your holiday let open this winter — and how Ocean Property Care can help

As autumn fades and the coastal winds pick up, many holiday let owners in the South Hams instinctively consider shutting their properties until spring.

But here’s the truth: closing your doors in winter could mean missing out on substantial income — and Ocean Property Care is here to make staying open easy and profitable.

Let’s look at the facts — and how we can help.

Flexible bookings boost your income

Travel habits change in the off-season. Short stays are in demand:

  • Nearly 60% of winter stays are 2–4 nights long, particularly around:

    • Christmas and New Year

    • Valentine’s Day

    • February half-term

    • Long weekends

Opening your calendar for short breaks (especially midweek and weekend combos) helps you fill more dates and reach different guest types — from couples to remote-working professionals.

Our changeover teams ensure fast, reliable turnovers — no matter how short the stay.

Guests are willing to pay more for comfort and bespoke experiences

Winter guests often expect – and are willing to pay for – those little luxuries:

  • Wood burners and welcome hampers can justify premium prices

  • Cozy interiors and festive décor can lead to repeat bookings and glowing reviews

  • Bespoke guest experiences can encourage people to book. From September, Ocean Property Care are here to organise the following activities*:

    • Foraging and private cooking classes

    • A private chef experience

    • A private mixology class (all of the above with Ad Hoc Catering)

    • Art classes with Naomi Hulatt

    • Surfing lessons at Bigbury or Bantham with Discovery Surf School

    • Private yoga lessons on the beach/terrace/garden (or inside if needed) with Claire Nash Yoga

    • Baby and elderly-sitting/caregiving can be arranged with fully qualified and DBS checked staff.

At Ocean Property Care, we can also help you style your property seasonally, manage décor setup, source items like throws, firewood, and welcome packs. We would be delighted to arrange bespoke guest experiences on your behalf.

*Please note that you do not need to be an existing Ocean Property Care customer to access these services.

Your property is less vulnerable when it’s in use

Closing up for the winter comes with risks:

  • Frozen pipes and damp can cause costly damage

  • Empty properties are more vulnerable to break-ins

  • Minor maintenance issues go unnoticed and worsen

By staying open (even with occasional bookings), you keep your home warm, ventilated, and in regular use. We offer:

  • Routine winter property checks

  • Deep cleans

  • Inventory and laundry checks

  • Emergency and routine maintenance support

  • Regular reporting and peace of mind

Let us take the worry off your shoulders — even if you’re miles away.
